FROM THE WORKSITES: 

Ø      Diane Hayes, Chapter Chair, City College, appointed chair of the new Committee on Health & Safety 

  

Ø      Los Angeles City College’s chapter executive board has donated funds for the campus-wide annual picnic  

 

Ø      Congratulations to Claudette Youins at Harbor College on her promotion  

 

Ø      Donald Santoianni, negotiating team member, Trade Tech, presented information on MOS certification at chapter meetings at ELAC, Pierce and Trade Tech

   

Ø      Dorothy Mundt, Chapter Chair, Mission College, reported that approximately 20 new ergonomic chairs have been ordered as part of their retro-fit program

   

Ø      Shawn Tramel, Chapter Chair, Trade Tech, brought to the attention of the Staff Guild Executive Board that classified employees were not being represented at the accreditation steering committee at the college 

Ø      Janice Washington, Delegate, District Office, was appointed chair of the newly formed Communications Committee which is looking at ways to bring our members to the Staff Guild website and improve communication   

STAFF GUILD HIGHLIGHTS: 

Ø      Negotiations for the 2007 – 2008 salary reopeners have begun  

Ø      The Staff Guild participated in district-wide Shared Governance process on Non-Discrimination policy revisions 

Ø      Mark your calendar: the annual Harbor Area Labor Day Parade in Wilmington is fast approaching. Staff Guild needs participation in the parade and Labor Day activities – Great family event! - More information later

  

Ø      UCLA Labor Center has used the Staff Guild’s contract language on ergonomics as an example for other unions’ contract negotiations  

 

AROUND THE DISTRICT:  

 

Ø      LACCD Board of Trustees has appointed Angela Reddock to fill Michael Waxman’s seat on the board.  Ms. Reddock will serve out the remainder of Mr. Waxman’s term, until elections next year. Congratulations and welcome to Ms. Reddock  

 

Ø      LACCD District-wide Walking Challenge has been a success!  All campuses plus the District Office have been actively involved.  Congratulations to Pierce College, our first walking challenge winner. The college will retain the crystal Walking Challenge trophy for one year 

Ø      June is National Safety Month 

        

 

UP & DOWN THE STATE:  

Ø      At the California Federation of Teachers’ Annual Delegates’ Convention in March 2007, Marty Hittelman (husband of Sandra Lepore, Staff Guild Executive Secretary) was elected CFT President and Dennis Smith, Secretary/Treasurer 

Ø      The Council of Classified Employees (CCE), re-elected Robert Chacanaca,  President and Velma J. Butler Southern Vice President in an election at the CFT Annual Delegates Convention in March.  Also elected were Janet Eberhart, Northern Vice President and Mary VanGinkle, Secretary 

Ø      UNITE HERE Local 11 have called for a boycott of the Glendale & LAX Hilton Hotels and the Wilshire Plaza Hotel  

Ø      UFCW vs. Ralph’s (includes Food 4 Less), Albertsons & Vons supermarkets.  The County Federation of Labor is asking union locals to support the UFCW by adopting a store should our union brothers and sisters go out on strike

  

Ø      Support Red Cross employees: If you want to give blood please use an alternate donation site. Due to Red Cross’ management rejecting proposals to increase donor safety 

   

Ø      SAVE THE DATE: Annual Staff Guild Membership Meeting, Saturday, September 15, 2007 at the Wilshire Grand Hotel
