CAMPUS REPORTS:  

City

Three summer sessions were scheduled with free parking.  Demolition of the men’s gymnasium has begun, which is the future site of the library to be completed early 2008.  Chapter meeting on 6-12-06.  Thank the AFT for contributing to the Annual Campus Picnic on 6-15.  

District Office

Annual Service Recognition Ceremony took place on August 8th.  The theme this year was Italian.  The Work Environment Committee met for the first time in months to address District Office issues such as air quality, ergonomic furniture and space allocations.  

East

Report given by delegate Anne Mayer about the issues on campus regarding understaffing restricted parking & the duties of student workers on campus.  

Harbor

The Staff Guild continues to wait for Harbor to provide an office as agreed upon in our 2005-2008 contract.  Dr. Ann Tomlinson was appointed Vice President of Administrative Services.  Through consultation the 9/80 schedule has been agreed to.  

Southwest

The SW Staff Guild Chapter is negotiating with the Vice President for appropriate office space.  The 2006 graduating class received the largest number of degrees & academic certificates to date. The campus bookstore is open for business.  Everyone is invited to visit.  Dr. Jack E. Daniels III was appointed interim president.  He comes to the District from Lincoln Land Community College, located in Springfield, Illinois.  

Trade

Trade Tech celebrated its 80th anniversary on 5-26-06.  The 2006 graduation had approximately 550 attendees.  Dr. Roland “Chip” Chapdelaine has been appointed new president.  Dr. Chapdelaine comes to Trade from Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio.  

Valley

The chapter has been assigned to share an office on campus with the faculty & academic senate. Above & Beyond Awards was held 5-25-06.  Classified Appreciation Luncheon was held 6-2-06. Dr. William Walls, an English instructor, was presented the Benjamin Franklin Award for his book The Hawk.  

West

Graduation Breakfast was held 6-13-06.  There was a Town Hall Meeting held to meet the candidates for president on 6-21-06.   Dr. Mark Rocha has been appointed president for West.  He was the interim Vice President of Academic Affairs at Mission College and was former president of Saddleback College in Orange County.  

Mission

The chapter meeting was held with limited participation from campus employees.  Contact chapter chair for next meeting.  Summer Bridge Program was designed to attract high school students to the campus.East LA College president, Ernest Moreno has been appointed interim president.  The new parking structure is under construction.  Summer enrollment is down 39%.  

Pierce

The Staff Guild will share office space with the Faculty Guild.   Chapter chair is helping to organize the Classified Dinner on campus.  There is continued concern regarding the duties of student workers on campus.      

UPCOMING EVENTS  

Phil Angelides will be joining working families for breakfast on Monday. September 4th.  The Labor Day Breakfast will take place at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Conference Center at 555 Temple Street, Los Angeles. Labor Solidarity March-Monday, September 4th on Broad & E Street, WilmingtonThe parade will assemble at 8 a.m. and the parade starts at 10 a.m. The festivities and rally will begin at noon at Banning Park.  The Staff Guild needs volunteers to arrive at 7:45 a.m. on the corner of Broad & E Streets.   Wear your union t-shirts.  For more info or directions to the Parade & Rally, contact Mary VanGinkle at (310) 350-3504.  Please join us and show your union pride! The theme this year is “Labor Fights for All Workers”.  

AFT Staff Guild Annual Membership Meeting-Saturday, September 16th Wilshire Grand Hotel Los Angeles, 8:30 a.m -11:30 a.m.  Breakfast will be provided and there will be door prizes and a grand prize. There will be possible changes to the constitution & by-laws.   Please call the AFT Office (323) 851-1521 ext 200 or 204 to RSVP.
