November 7, 2010Cárdenas Makes National History with Federal Bill H.R. 3526

The Los Angeles City Council has unanimously passed a resolution supporting historic federal legislation introduced by Congressmember Diane E. Watson (D-33) on July 31, 2009 that will change gang intervention in Los Angeles and across the country. The federal bill, known as the Tony Cárdenas Community-Based Gang Intervention Act codifies the Community-Based Gang Intervention Model, the nation’s first comprehensive gang intervention model, authored by Councilmember Tony Cárdenas and passed by the Los Angeles City Council in 2008. The bill will help reduce gang violence and prevent wasteful spending on intervention programs that are simply not working. It’s the first federal bill to help professionalize gang intervention workers across the nation and hold them accountable for the services they provide.

Says Cárdenas, “I am humbled that a model developed by the community has now become a federal bill that will have an impact across America in reducing violence and saving lives. This is a critical step in ensuring that we have the resources and mechanisms to increase peace and safety nationwide.”

The federal bill is the first to be named after a sitting Councilmember.

Cárdenas Motion to 'Green' the City's Taxi Fleet Unanimously ApprovedOn October 26, 2010, Councilman Tony Cárdenas, joined by Councilman Paul Krekorian, received unanimous city council support of the ‘Green Taxi’ motion, signifying an immediate start to greening the city’s taxi fleet. “What we passed today is a step closer to making Los Angeles a green city and creating healthier communities.  Los Angeles can now join other cities throughout the country which have done so already,” said Cárdenas. Nationwide, municipalities such as San Francisco, Long Beach, New York and Seattle have moved towards greening their taxi fleet. The motion calls for 80% of the taxi fleet to be comprised of fuel efficient vehicles phased in over the next five years.
