Tomorrow: Mass Day of Action with Occupy Oakland
The recent raids and attacks on Occupy encampments in Oakland and around the country have only made the movement stronger and more committed than ever before. Solidarity and justice for the 99% bind us together in our fight for a fair economy, quality education, workers’ rights and the end Wall Street greed. Tomorrow, join unions, community groups, Oakland residents, students and Occupy supporters for a peaceful Day of Action from 2-430pm. Events throughout the day include a rally at Frank Ogawa Plaza, a march to the Big Banks, and an action at Lakeview Elementary to support Oakland schools. Learn more and view the schedule of events.
Walk for Homeless Veterans with L.A. Labor
The city of LA has more homeless veterans than anywhere else in the nation. On any given day there is an estimated 7,000 homeless veterans in Los Angeles. “Every time I see somebody sleeping on the streets or carrying their life long belongings on their back through town, it hurts me. And as a veteran, it adds insult to injury,” said Bobby Olvera Jr. of the LA County Federation of Labor. “You leave your home to get on a plane or on a ship to fight for our country, and when you come home after doing your duty, you find out you don't have a home.” Saturday is the United Way’s annual 5K HomeWalk to end homelessness, and hundreds of union members will be participating to specifically support homeless veterans. To join the LA Labor Homeless Heroes team, meet on Saturday morning at Exposition Park, Booth 1. Check-in starts at 7am, and the walk begins at 9am. The first 400 labor walkers to check in will receive a free tee-shirt. Learn more.
