Health Care ACTION ALERT

In the waning days of the legislative session, Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez and State Senate leader Don Perata have agreed to several changes in AB 8, their health care reform bill, that meet criteria the CFT, along with allies in the labor movement and health care community, have sought for months.  These include:

bullet affordability
bullet employer mandate
bullet cost containment
bullet expanded eligibility
bullet transparency.

While the bill does not propose a "single payer" solution to the state's health care problems like SB 840 (Kuehl), also supported by CFT, it represents a step forward in access and coverage for millions of Californians and their families.  And due to its expansion of a statewide purchasing pool, the CFT believes that AB 8 can become a significant building block toward single payer health care. SB 840 will return next year, and CFT will continue to support single payer every way we can.

Meanwhile, time is short to let your legislators know you support AB 8. It may well come to a vote in the next 24 hours. Click here now to send a message to your representatives in the state legislature.

New Single Payer Health Care Video

You can now order “The Healthcare Solution:  California OneCare,” a 22 minute video on DVD or VHS, which explains why our healthcare system is in crisis and how to solve it with a single payer health care system, which would provide quality universal coverage for less money than we spend now.  The video comes with an organizing packet, $10.  Click here for more info or to order Click here to view on YouTube
