Passed by the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor
Delegates Meeting September 18, 2006

Whereas, the war in Iraq continues unabated, with costs and casualties of Americans and Iraqis growing everyday, and

Whereas, due to the pre-emptive illegal war being waged and the continued occupation of Iraq, citizens of the US are less secure today than at the time of the invasion; and

Whereas, 80 % of Iraqis and nearly 2/3 of the US public want the occupation to end and to have all foreign troops leave Iraq; and

Whereas, 72% of U.S. troops in Iraq said they want to come home before the year is out - 29% said “immediately,” and

Whereas, the total financial cost of the war, now projected to reach $1.27 trillion, has driven up the annual deficit and will saddle our children and future generations with burdensome payments, and

Whereas, these expenses have led to cuts in social and human services, health care, education and even benefits for the veterans of this and other conflicts, while lining the pockets of wealthy anti-labor corporations and the elite investor class, thus making this a war on working families; and

Whereas, US Labor Against the War has been at the forefront of the movement to end the occupation of Iraq and to return all troops safely; and

Whereas, US Labor Against the War has issued a call to its Third National Assembly Against the War in Iraq in Cleveland, Ohio on December 1, 2006 in conjunction with a National Labor Conference Against the War in Iraq to be held immediately following on December 2-3, 2006; and

Whereas, the LA Country Federation of Labor is an affiliate member of US Labor Against the War;

Therefore, let it be resolved that the LA County Federation of Labor endorses USLAW's Third National Assembly Against the War in Iraq and the National Labor Conference Against the War in Iraq to be held December 1-3, 2006 in Cleveland, Ohio; and

Further resolved, that a sum of $500 be allocated to allow members of the LA County Fed to attend these events, with the proviso that anyone attending at Fed expense will provide a report back, at the December or January Delegate Assembly; and

Further resolved, that the LA County Federation of Labor will publicize these events to all its affiliates, urging them to affiliate with US Labor Against the War and to send delegates to the gatherings.
