STAFF GUILD HIGHLIGHTS:
o AFT Staff Guild members voted for their choice of candidates in the 2008 Staff Guild elections.

o The Leadership at Trade Tech has been meeting with the president to strengthen the relationship and address major issues between labor and management.
o The Personnel Commission has offered a training/examination workshop to qualified Clerical/Technical members for the position of Administrative Assistant, Academic Affairs. Each candidate attended four mandatory workshops to be eligible to take the written examination at the conclusion of the training. The Staff Guild had requested this process in the past to enhance promotional opportunities for Unit I employees and to assist in the recruitment and selection of qualified candidates. Many thanks to the Personnel Commission.
o Chancellor Drummond has agreed to a request by the Staff Guild to develop a Return to Work program for members who have been out on Worker’s Compensation/Illness Leave. The Staff Guild persevered to enforce the contract and District procedure for employees return to work. AFT also promotes ways for members to experience a smooth transition upon returning to work.
o Staff Guild Representative Donald Santoianni of Trade Tech is presenting a workshop on how to prepare for the MOS Certification exam and apply for the differential. If you are interested in having this workshop at your worksite, please contact your Chapter Chair for more details.
o Los Angeles Trade Tech College’s Labor Center helps workers, union members and students learn and advance by educating them in:
ü Union Leadership
ü Workers’ Job Rights & Protections
ü Labor Relations Skills & Trends
If you are interested in attending Labor Center classes see Article 17, Professional Development, of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, to apply for reimbursement. Brochures are available at the AFT office.
Labor Studies Graduates are prepared for
leadership at the workplace and in their unions. They hold positions within
unions such as negotiators, representatives and organizers. Many state, federal
and local government agencies employ labor relations specialists.

o The Student Employee Handbook is moving forward thanks to the actions of the Student-Worker Study Group, initiated by the AFT Staff Guild. The handbook will provide guidelines for student workers, classified staff, supervisors and managers in the hiring, placement, assigned duties and training of student personnel.
o Hollywood to the Docks March was sponsored by the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. Over 150 walkers from a diverse number of local unions completed a three day, 28 mile March. The March addressed the Fight for Good Jobs. Thank you Staff Guild participants and Marchand Russell for completing the three day March.
o California Labor Federation and the California Federation of Teachers sponsored a Joint Legislative Conference and Lobby Day in Sacramento on April 30th and May 1st. The AFT Staff Guild was represented by its leadership.
o The UCLA Labor Center Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the Center at the Cathedral Plaza.
o Thank you Staff Guild’s CFT Convention Delegates who attended the 66th Annual Convention. The total number of Staff Guild Delegates attended was 36.
